Lacks force in op 54
Great Cello concerto. Fantastic formal freedom. Much better concerto than piano concerto. Deserve more fame. Great recording. Coin is inspired. Perhaps his cello lacks volume but his reading is deeply felt, so is Herreweghe's. Piano concerto is another thing. Herreweghe is just fine, so is Harnoncourt, Rattle and others. Staier plays with sensitivity and sparkling clarity, but on the whole the reading offers nothing special. And the finale is surprisingly slow and lacks passion, its driving force. here you will find moments where the piano lacks volume. A far more interesting reading is by Lars Vogt with Simon Rattle: nice tempos, not overtly romanticized, total partnership and alternation between force and "suavitas" by the piano. The orchestra is in fine form, with enough internal clarity and punching brass (better than herreweghe; seems more "period instruments" colour)and a fantastic finale. Also comes with his record brother Grieg op 16 (a concerto inspired in Schumanns op 54), also fantasticly played. So if you wnat op 54, go to Rattle. If you like to know op 129, go to herreweghe (I dont know if there are better versions). So Herreweghe's op 54 is interesting in hearing how limited was the 1850 piano in a work that points to a piano 30 or 40 years later. Here the piano blends more deeply with the orchestra, but lacks force and the last movement is spoiled here by its slow speeds. So, op 54 is just to Staier or Herreweghe fans. leonardobaires@yahoo.com
